The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus shown in the available colors of Jet Black, Black, Gold, Rose Gold, and Silver

So What’s New in the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus?

– Posted in: Reviews

I get asked once a year if I am going to get the latest iPhone.  My answer is always the same.  It’s always, “Absolutely!  I mean…  Why wouldn’t I?  Its the best iPhone they’ve ever made!” lol…

That question is always followed up with, “So what’s different?” After some more sarcastic answers, I have to go over the keynote with them. So to save myself some time I created this post so that I can just send them the link!

New Features In The iPhone 7

A new finish called Jet Black.  It is a high gloss finish and the antenna are hardly noticeable.  A second color they refer to as Black.  Its a matte black finish.  Definitely my favorite.  The rest of the colors are Silver, Gold, and Rose Gold.

No more clicking!  The button is a solid state, force sensitive, button.  There are a bunch of things it does that will take an entire post on its own to cover.

It meets the IP67 protection standard.  So what does that mean?  Well, its not water proof, but its a lot better then it was.  “IP” stands for Ingress Protection.  The “6” means that it is “Totally protected against dust”.  The “7” means that it is “Protected against the effect of immersion between 15cm and 1m”.  So if you have been unfortunate enough to drop your past iPhone in the toilet, it will probably survive from water damage.  Hopefully, if it does happen to your iPhone 7, it will be before you do your business.

Its a new 12MP system.  It allows up to 3x longer exposure and has optical image stabilization.  Larger f/1.8 aperture with 6 lens.  A high-speed sensor that is 30% more efficient and 60% quicker.  The “True Tone” flash now has 4 LEDs and is twice as bright.  There is a flicker sensor to deal with those pesky florescent lights.  An Apple-Designed signal processor that handles all the bajillion processes that need to be done as you press the capture button.  Its better in low light photography.  The front facing camera is a 7MP camera.

The iPhone 7 Plus will have two 12MP rear cameras.  It will include a 56mm lens along with the 28mm included in the iPhone 7.  The 56mm lens allows twice the zoom of the 28mm.

While not a hardware improvement, they will release a software update in the coming months that will allow you to get a DSLR-like Bokeh in “Portrait” mode.

The new displays will have a wider color gamut that is “Cinema Standard”.  They will be 25% brighter and they are color managed meaning what you see is what you get when a photo goes to print.

There are two speakers now.  One on the top of the iPhone and one on the bottom of the iPhone.

Apple is ditching the 3.5mm plug and moving their wired Ear Pods to the lightning port.  Honestly, Im so glad they are doing this.  Every 3.5mm cable I have ever used in one of my cars has a crappy connection.  I hope this eliminates that.

Air Pods. $170 Ear Pods without the wire.  They seem pretty awesome but I don’t use my headphones enough to justify the cost.  Pairing them is insanely easy as with all things Apple.  They come with a small carrying case that also acts as a charger.  They last about 5 hours and when they need to charge, you drop them into the case and throw it in your pocket.  There is a ton of tech inside them so who knows…  I may work a little overtime and get me a pair when they launch.  You can also get the same tech in a few different Beats headphone lines.

It doesn’t really effect us here in the US.  They are adding some additional chip so that Apple Pay can be used in Japan.

The new chip is the A10 Fusion. Its a 64-bit 4-core processor. Two cores are High Performance and two are High Efficiency. The two High Performance cores are 40% faster than the A9 (iPhone 6S) and twice as fast as the A8 (iPhone 6). The High Efficiency cores run at 1/5th the power of the other two. They’re designed to run mundane tasks such as checking your email or creating a new note. Apple designed a performance controller to ensure the right processes get ran in the right cores.

Graphics performance is 50% faster than the A9 and 300% faster than then A8.  It uses 2/3 less power then the A9 and 1/2 the power of the A8.  All this together means your iPhone 7 and 7 Plus can play games that are console quality.  It also means that editing Apps like Adobe’s Light Room can run at near desktop quality.

The average battery life of an iPhone 7 should be about two hours longer than a 6s.  The 7 Plus should last about a hour longer than the 6s Plus.

I hope this helps!

Happy losing,
